Blue Light Acne Treatment

Acne is the most common skin condition affecting approximately 50 million Americans per year. Acne affects people of all ages though it is most common among teens and adult women. Acne is caused by a combination of factors including hormones, excess sebum (oil) production, overgrowth of acne causing bacteria and clogged pores.

How a pimple develops

An accumulation of dead skin cells and sebum clog a hair follicle. Bacteria colonize the hair follicle causing inflammation creating a pimple.

How Blue Light Acne Treatment works

Blue light treatment can be used alone or in conjunction with other therapies to treat mild to moderate acne. Blue light helps to diminish the propionibacterium (bacteria) that leads to inflammation and the formation of pimples.

What are the benefits of blue light acne therapy?

Blue light therapy is noninvasive treatment that is safe for all skin types. There is no downtime and little recovery. After treatment you will feel like you have a mild sunburn, and the skin may tingle for a few hours to a day. Other side effects are rare. In order to receive the best results a series of two treatments per week for four weeks is suggested. Maintenance treatments of 2-3 times a year will help to keep your complexion clear.

What to expect during treatment

Your skin will be cleansed with a gentle cleanser and you will spend 15-20 minutes under the blue light. The treatment is painless and easy to tolerate. Our staff will provide you with complete before and after instructions to limit side effects.

After treatment your skin will be sensitive to light. It is imperative to avoid direct sunlight for 48 hours after treatment. After that time it is very important to protect your skin  by using sunscreen when outdoors.
